THREE LONG WEEKS GO by, and I give Aly as much space as I can. I am grateful that work needs me. In fact, I volunteer to work so I’m not tempted to take Aly up on her offer. But, I miss her like crazy. When she asks me to dinner, I jump at the opportunity to spend some time with her. Alone. I keep telling myself this is just dinner, nothing more than that. I will be on my best behavior.

It’s as soon as I see her in the kitchen dancing and singing while she’s cooking that my best behavior plan is shot to hell. I want to go in there and kiss her passionately. I lightly kick the door to get her attention since I’ve got my hands full. She stops dancing and runs to the door.

“What’s all this?”

I didn’t want to show up empty handed to her place. “I got wine for you, beer for me, and snacks for the movie we will probably end up watching later.” It’s what we used to do all the time, dinner and a movie. I put everything on the counter as she holds up a superhero flick she loves.

“Already had it picked out.”

That’s my girl. “Knew you would. It smells good in here. What’s for dinner?” She is an amazing cook. I’m surprised I’m not sporting a gut with her living downstairs. I definitely have to kick up my workouts at the gym to stay in shape, but it is worth it to eat whatever she makes.

“Steak, twice baked potatoes and green beans with almonds. I tried a new marinade for the steak.”

My mouth is watering already. I go to the drawer where she keeps her wine opener. On the table, she already has a wine glass for herself and a tall glass for my beer. Every now and then I don’t mind a glass of wine, but I usually prefer beer. I pour her a glass as she plates the food.

During dinner, we talk about all that we’ve been doing for the past few weeks. She tells me about her clubbing escapades with Lexi. I don’t want to think of her out dancing with other men or drinking when I’m not there to watch out for her, but, I keep my mouth shut.

“How’s Hunter’s place coming along?” Aly asks me.

“Good, we’ve got all the bathrooms done. Next job is the kitchen. That will be a total gut job.” We make mindless conversation for the rest of dinner before moving to the living room for the movie. “You want another glass of wine?”

She smiles, looking over her shoulder while sliding the disc in. “Yes, please. I’m just going to change before we start.”

I put her glass on the table, taking a sip from my beer as she returns. She comes in the room, wearing those tiny shorts she likes and a tank top with one of those built in bras. I’ve seen her in this a million times, and it still gets to me.
